McGovern worked for the Minneapolis Tribune, KSTP-Radio, and as public relations manager for Minnesota governor Floyd B. Olson.

Gisle Christian Johnson Bothne was born on September 7, 1860 in Frederickshald, Norway, the son of Thrond Johnson and Johanne Okland Bothne. He received his early education in Norway. The family emigrated to the United States in 1876 when Bothne's father accepted a professorial position at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Earle Brown was born on October 6, 1879 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Brown was raised by his mother and grandfather, John Martin, one of the founders of 1st National Bank and Northwestern Consolidated Milling company, on the family farm in Brooklyn Center.
